STOCHOS: Stochastic opportunistic maintenance scheduling for offshore wind farms

Despite the promising outlook, numerous economic and environmental benefits of offshore wind energy are still compromised by its high Operations Maintenance (O&M) expenditures. On one hand, offshore-specific challenges such as site remoteness, harsh weather, transportation requirements, production losses, significantly inflate O&M costs relative to land-based farms. other uncertainties in weather conditions, asset degradation, electricity prices largely constrain farm operator’s ability identify time windows at which maintenance is possible, let alone optimal. In response, we propose STOCHOS, short for stochastic holistic opportunistic scheduler—a scheduling approach tailored address unique Given probabilistic forecasts key operational parameters, STOCHOS optimally schedules tasks harnessing opportunities that arise due favorable on-site resources, maximal operating revenues. formulated a two-stage mixed-integer linear program, solve using scenario-based rolling horizon algorithm aligns with industrial practice. Tested on real-world data from U.S. North Atlantic where several farms in-development, demonstrates considerable improvements prevalent benchmarks, across various metrics, including total cost, downtime, resource utilization, interruptions.
